Letter from the Executive Director

Dear Friends,

With 2018 behind us, we at NAMI Central Virginia are excited about our new beginning as I
assumed the role of Executive Director.  I owe a huge thank you to the organization’s Board of
Directors and committed staff for making this transition seamless.

Please know that I am truly honored and excited to join NAMI Central Virginia. I have
supported and admired the work of the organization for many years. My set of professional
experiences includes a number of leadership positions. Also, I bring with me an extensive
background in community based organizational leadership and a longstanding commitment to
changing the landscape for individuals with intellectual disabilities and mental illnesses.

In 2019, NAMI Central Virginia is well positioned and will continue to build upon its great
legacy, working alongside our board members, stellar staff and community partners in pursuit of
our major goals. We are dedicated to ensuring that residents throughout the region continue to
get the services and support they deserve. We will aim to build our capacity, become more
visible, and continue to work with our community partners to meet the mental health needs of all
citizens regardless of their background or socioeconomic status.

I recognize I have a lot to learn and I intend to invest time and attention to get to know and
understand the NAMI Central Virginia culture; policies and procedures; and the legislative
environment impacting mental health advocacy. I stand with the board in its commitment to
improving the lives of Central Virginians with serious mental illness through education, support,
advocacy, resources, and anti-stigma campaigns.

Once again, thank you. I encourage you to consider donating this year and/or inquire how we can
work together to reach and serve more individuals living with mental illnesses.

Best Regards,

Mark A. Richardson, PhD
